The experience
The day is dedicated to the village of Varallo in Valsesia dominated by the majestic Sacro Monte di Varallo, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, whose historic center preserves a rich artistic and architectural heritage.
At the end of the nineteenth century, Varallo became a luxurious destination with a hydrotherapy establishment that already had a public lighting system. Today, all that remains of its tourist past during the Belle Époque are the elegant villas and palaces of the city centre.
Worth mentioning are the Energy Museum and the Fishing Museum.
In the Energy Museum, you will find yourself in front of one of the most impressive steam engines used in the processing of cotton, one of the largest in Europe, coming from the plant of a cotton factory commissioned by the German Eugenio Bauer. Founded in 1877, the manufacture went through various stages of production until the installation of steam engines, which took place by 1901. During its heyday, the company employed about 800 people and included worker care facilities, farmland, and ranches. The museum is divided into three large sections: the main hall with the steam engines, the area added in the 1930s for the machinery, and the area of the modern machines currently in use.
The Fishing Museum aims to illustrate the traditional technique of “fly” or “Valsesian” fishing, renowned worldwide for the precision and ingenuity required in the construction of the hooks, the casting technique, the making of the rod. The collection includes tools and materials donated by fishing enthusiasts, including ancient rods dating back to the first post-war period, together with period documents and a precious video of interviews with elderly fishermen, with the aim of preserving and transmitting the history of fishing in Valsesia.
The Sacro Monte di Varallo, dating back to the sixteenth century, offers a unique experience. It is an important place of pilgrimage and contemplation consisting of twenty frescoed chapels depicting the life of Christ and the Saints. With its artistic and architectural testimonies, it represents a precious treasure trove of memory and identity to explore the spiritual roots in the heart of Piedmont.
