Questo itinerario è un omaggio al ruolo primario che la città e la provincia di Alessandria hanno saputo svolgere per un lungo cinquantennio, nell’età eroica del ciclismo che abbraccia i primi anni dell’unità nazionale e arriva fino al primo conflitto mondiale
Scoprirai storie di passione e di fatica, che sono il ritratto dell’Italia vissuta dai tuoi antenati, dei Campionissimi, dei loro gregari, e delle grandi emozioni legate agli uomini delle due ruote, da Fausto Coppi a Costante Girardengo, da Giovanni Gerbi a Giovanni Cuniolo.
Tutto ha inizio nel 1867 ad Alessandria, con l’arrivo di una delle prime biciclette portate in Italia dall’imprenditore alessandrino Carlo Michel, dopo una visita all’Expo di Parigi.
Alessandria riconquista così un ruolo che è sempre stato suo nella storia del ciclismo e del giornalismo sportivo, riaffermando le ragioni profonde per cui diventerà la “terra dei Campionissimi”, nati non per caso in un ambiente in cui la passione per le biciclette è sempre stata di casa, e offrendo un contributo speciale a fare del ciclismo uno sport popolare, forse anche i tuoi parenti emigrati da qua ti hanno raccontato della loro passione per il ciclismo. Modelli storici perfettamente restaurati, cimeli delle varie attività sportive svolte su strada e su pista, testimonianze dei grandi campioni e mostre temporanee ti attendono.
Il tuo viaggio continuerà poi nei luoghi di Girardengo e Coppi, che hanno fatto la storia di questo sport in Italia, quando un intero paese, si fermava per seguire le loro gesta dal vivo e sui primi televisori che pochi fortunati possedevano e che spesso venivano condivisi con tutti per aggregazione sociale, in compagnia e concedendo una pausa alle attività quotidiane. Un viaggio alla scoperta delle tue radici, quando l’Italia si paralizzava per seguire gli inseguimenti di Coppi e Bartali, proprio come oggi si seguono i Mondiali di Calcio, perché nel Dopoguerra il vero sport nazionale era il ciclismo.
Il ricordo di questo territorio per i suoi campioni si rinnova ogni anno con due appuntamenti di grandissimo richiamo: la Santa Messa del 2 gennaio in suffragio di Fausto Coppi e la ciclostorica “La Mitica” che si tiene l’ultima domenica di giugno, dove potrai rivivere i momenti di festa che un tempo animavano la vita dei tuoi parenti.

Bicycle Museum & Archive Visit
For those who love cycling, this is the ideal land, here everything tells the story of the bicycle that can be retraced along mythical roads and museums dedicated to great champions.
Your day starts from Alessandria where, in the city center, there is the Palazzo del Monferrato which houses the AcdB Museum (Alessandria city of the Bicycle). The Museum, which you will visit with a guide, pays homage to the great champions who have made the history of cycling, the journalists who have told it and illustrates the history of the first bicycle that arrived in Italy in 1867 in Alessandria.

In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to consult with an expert, the documents concerning your family, at the Provincial State Archives. In fact, of particular importance are the notarial archives, which include documentation from the eleventh century: the oldest deed, drawn up in 1021, is the purchase and sale of a vineyard in Monferrato.

The champions your grandfather followed
Transfer of a few minutes to Novi Ligure. With the guide you will visit the Museum of the Champions, dedicated to Fausto and Serse Coppi and to Costante Girardengo, where bicycles are exhibited to show the evolution of the vehicle but also the stories of the champions and their vehicles: from the Maino of Girardengo to the Bianchi of Coppi, to the “red devil” of Giovanni Gerbi, the Legnano of Bartali, up to the most “modern” bicycles used by champions of the calibre of Pantani, Moser and Cipollini.
At lunch, you’ll be hosted by a local restaurateur, who will take you back in time, letting you taste the dishes that your grandparents or great-grandparents used to eat on feast days. The aroma and flavors of the food and wine of this piece of Piedmont will take you back to those past times.
In the early afternoon departure for Castellania, 20 minutes from Novi, on the Tortona hills. Here you will have the chance to visit the birthplace of Fausto Coppi and his brother Xerxes. The guide will accompany you to the birthplace of the two brothers, which has been transformed into a museum full of photographs and memorabilia that bring to mind the great exploits of the Heron, celebrated together with his brother in the Mausoleum located in the village square. But you will also be able to enter a house in which time stood still many years ago, which shows the life of the time, similar perhaps to that of your ancestors.
