The experience
In the heart of Turin, within the historic halls of Palazzo Tapparelli D’Azeglio, you will immerse yourself in the history of the Risorgimento, the Waldensian history, and the history of Italian migration around the world. Indeed, this is where the Altreitalie Study Center on Italian Migrations in the World is located.
The seventeenth-century palace, originally home to the renowned Tapparelli D’Azeglio family and residence of the D’Azeglio brothers, Massimo and Roberto, holds significant historical importance. Massimo was a politician, patriot, painter, writer, and Roberto was a politician, patriot, and the first signatory, on November 30, 1847, of the petition that led to the emancipation of the Waldensians and then the Jews of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
After a brief visit to the rooms, which will astonish you with the fusion of different architectural and decorative styles, reflecting the various artistic and cultural influences that have shaped it over its more than three centuries of existence, you will delve into the history and stories of Italian and Piedmontese emigration. With the aid of multimedia technology, you can learn to use “Search Your Roots,” a search engine that allows you to find the names of family members in the passenger lists related to Argentina, the United States, and Brazil.
