The experience
The day will be accompanied by a guide and the first part will be dedicated to the discovery of the wonderful Grana Valley, a small valley that winds gently between the Stura and Maira Valleys, a treasure trove of unique beauty.
The King of the Valley is Castelmagno, the PDO cheese produced in the mountain village of the same name, characterized by a picturesque atmosphere and surrounded by the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. The village has traditional architecture, with stone houses climbing into the mountains. The tranquility of the place is interrupted only by the soothing sound of the pastures and the cowbells of the cows grazing freely nearby.
Castelmagno is renowned not only for its fine cheese but also for its rich history and traditions related to mountain agriculture, which the local community proudly preserves.
In the hamlet of Colletto di Castelmagno is the ‘Lou Pichot Muzeou d’la Vita d’Isi’, a fascinating museum rich in local history and traditions, divided into three distinctive sections, each dedicated to a significant aspect of life in Castelmagno.
The first section of the museum features an extensive collection of objects and tools used in everyday life in the past.
The second section is dedicated to the works of the emigrants from Castelmagnese. This part of the museum, through objects, photographs and stories, celebrates and bears witness to the stories and experiences of Castelmagno residents who have left their home country to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Finally, the third section of the museum exhibits ancient means of transportation, providing a window into the modes of travel used in the past. This segment offers an interesting perspective on how the community has moved and connected with other locations over the years.
Worthy of note is the Filatoio Rosso di Caraglio, which was built in just two years (1676-1678) and included two uses: production and housing. The silk mill, understood as a complex that includes both a spinning mill and a spinning mill, is the oldest factory in Europe still in existence and one of the oldest factories in the world ever.
The capital is Cuneo, considered a dynamic and active crossroads in trade for the exchange of products between the valleys and the plain, for centuries confined within its walls. However, during the Napoleonic occupation, the walls were torn down, allowing the expansion of the urban fabric.
During the Second World War, Cuneo and its region were the scene of intense anti-fascist and partisan struggles. A particularly illustrious hero of this resistance was Duccio Galimberti, a partisan from Cuneo who was shot by the fascists in 1944. In his honor, the city has dedicated its most important square.
