"FROM SQUARE TO SQUARE": THE DAYS OF THE MONASTERIERS IN THE WORLD BETWEEN MEMORIES OF EMIGRATION AND CURRENT EVENTS OF THE NEW IMMIGRATIONS

The Municipality of Monastero Bormida in synergy with the neighboring Municipalities of Montechiaro d’Acqui and Spigno Monferrato and with the various associative and cultural realities of the area, combines tourist enhancement and historical-family community research, with various activities and events that occupy most of 2024 and culminate in the “three days” of the “From Square to Square” event, entirely dedicated to roots tourism.

The goal is to recover the umbilical cord represented by the memorial heritage to be collected, archived and made usable and shared and, at the same time, to enhance a tourism aware of the value of the places of origin.

The “highlight” of the project – preceded by research and contacts with the descendants of emigrants abroad or in Italy and the involvement of new immigrants in the area – is the organization of an identity manifestation both for the local community, and for the descendants of “historical” emigrants, both for the “returning Monasteries”, and, finally, for those from other nations who have chosen Monastero Bormida as their new residence.

This will be “From Square to Square”, an event spread over three days and located in the most interesting and particular points of the town.
The program includes theme evenings, in which local musical groups, street art and theater companies bring the traditions of the area to the square, amalgamating history, folklore and culture.

Activities include:

a first part (March-June 2024) dedicated to preparatory activities (registry research of emigrant families, their descendants, abroad or in Italy, collection of stories, images, relics, conference on emigration, massive invitations to the “Returning Monasteries”, etc.)

a second part (July 2024) focused on the organization and management of the “From Square to Square” event which includes:

Contacts with musical groups, theater, street artists, etc. for the animation of the event and organization of tasting points

• Evening – Friday 26/07/2024 – dedicated to music with 8 stations (traditional groups, Piedmontese folk music, youth bands, jazz, blues, etc.) in the historic center

Evening – Saturday 27/07/2024 – dedicated to street artists with 10 jugglers, tightrope walkers, contemporary circus, acrobats, dancers in the courtyard of the castle and in the historic center

III evening – Sunday 28/07/2024 – dedicated to itinerant theater with 8 theatrical stations by professional and amateur Piedmontese companies offering pièces dedicated to emigration / immigration.
All three evenings will see the presence of n.
