World in a Suitcase: Small and large plots of emigration

The Giovan Pietro Vanni Association of Viganella, a hamlet of the municipality of Borgomezzavalle we are in the Antrona Valley, one of the 5 valleys that make up the Ossola in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, organizes, in collaboration with Italea Piemonte and the provincial school office, the contest “World in a Suitcase: small and large plots of emigration”.

The initiative is mainly open to primary schools (elementary) and lower secondary schools (or middle schools) and aims to be a meeting between the creativity of our young people with the world of migration of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

There will also be a section of the contest open to the public where anyone can participate trying to tell the phenomenon of migration in a different way.

Each participant will have a small gift, provided they attend the award ceremony to be held in February.

In the meantime, those who want more information can come to Viganella next Saturday, September 7 at 17:00, at Casa Vanni, On that occasion the contest will be presented with an in-depth analysis by the anthropologist Luca Ciurleo, the economist Samuel Piana and thepresident of the association Pier Franco Midali.
The event is included in the program of the patron saint celebrations and thanks to this concomitance you can listen to a very special story of emigration thanks to the voice of Bob Conti, originally from Viganella who has been living in the USA for some time.

Below is an excerpt from the regulation:

Participating Schools:

  1. Participation in the contest is completely free.
  2. Each participating school will send a group work and it may consist of collages of images, videos, video interviews, written stories, a collection of emigration-themed audios and any other creative form deemed valid for the exhibition of the work.
  3. The materials must be sent by email to: segreteria@italeapimeonte.co, in case the files are too heavy contact the organization.
  4. The subject of the email must be: PARTICIPATION IN THE MEETING “WORLD IN A SUITCASE”.
    The text of the email must include the references of the school, the contacts of the project contact person and a brief summary describing the paper.
  5. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION of the works is: Monday 20 January 2025
  6. All participating schools will be awarded a participation prize, provided they are present at the award ceremony to be held in February 2025
  7. At the sole discretion of the jury, special prizes may be provided for the type of work or accuracy of the work
  8. The works will be evaluated by a jury of experts composed of literary critics, videomakers, literature teachers, historians of emigration, representatives of the municipalities and organizing bodies.
  9. The Giovan Pietro Vanni Association and the Radici Piemontesi ETS Cooperative, concessionaire of the Italea brand, reserve the right of non-exclusive use of the works sent, which may be published on any means and support (paper and/or digital) without time limits, for various types of installations, for the production of information, editorial, promotional material, also online, of its own institutional initiatives and, in general, for the pursuit of its institutional purposes.
  10. By participating in the contest you accept all the rules of these regulations.

Individual participants:

  1. Participation in the contest is completely free.
  2. The participant must send a text on the subject of emigration, in Italian, completely anonymous
  3. The paper must be in text format (.txt, .doc, NOT in .pdf format) and sent EXCLUSIVELY by email to segreteria@italeapiemonte.com.
  4. The subject of the email must be: PARTICIPATION IN THE MEETING “WORLD IN A SUITCASE”.
    The text of the email must contain the author’s data, in particular Name, Surname, residential address, telephone contact, e-mail, and authorization for the possible publication of one’s writing.
  5. The deadline for receipt of the works is Monday 20 January 2025.
  6. All participants will be awarded a participation prize, provided they are present at the award ceremony to be held in February 2025.
  7. At the sole discretion of the jury, special prizes may be provided for the type of work or accuracy of the work
  8. The works will be evaluated by a jury of experts composed of literary critics, literature teachers, historians of emigration, anthropologists representing the municipalities and the organizing bodies.
  9.
